Prof Jacques Bergman
Jacques Bergman is Professor of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy at Amsterdam UMC, where he leads a multidisciplinary research team, and as of January 2026 serves as Editor-in-Chief of Endoscopy, the leading journal in the field. His career is dedicated to advancing gastrointestinal endoscopy through innovation, research, and a "less-is-more" philosophy. His group's work spans four pillars: AI and digital workflow — machine learning for computer-assisted detection, characterisation, and quality control; early neoplasia treatment — endoscopic resection and ablation of early-stage cancers; metabolic interventions — duodenal ablation (hydrothermal and electroporation) and pancreatic gene therapy, combined with single-cell RNA sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, and microbiome studies; and risk prediction and surveillance — biomarkers, alternative tissue sampling, and modelling to optimise Barrett's oesophagus care. A strong advocate for sustainable, high-value endoscopy, he leads "less-is-more" initiatives within the Dutch GI Society. His team of over 25 professionals coordinates global multicentre trials across Europe, the US, and China. He has authored 450+ peer-reviewed publications and textbook chapters (h-index 93, 32,000+ citations), is lead investigator on international trials in Barrett's neoplasia, metabolic endoscopy, and risk prediction, and is an international keynote speaker.
